Trip Itinerary
Welcome to the Venice of the East! You arrive at Srinagar airport (1,585m) and we take you to a beautiful wooden houseboat on Dal Lake. Today is for relaxing and feeling the water. In the evening, you enjoy a peaceful Shikara ride as the sun sets behind the mountains. You can see the floating markets and local life on the lake. It is the perfect start for your Srinagar to Ladakh road trip packages. Stay overnight in the houseboat with a delicious Kashmiri dinner.
Today we explore the "Jewels of Kashmir." We drive 40 km to see the famous Mughal Gardens—Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh. They have beautiful flowers and old trees from the king's time. We also visit the Shankaracharya Temple on a hill for a full view of the city. The elevation is low, so you can walk easily. It is a day of colors and history before we move to the high mountains. Overnight stay at the hotel/houseboat in Srinagar.
We take a scenic drive to Gulmarg (2,650m), which is one of the most beautiful hill stations. The main highlight is the Gondola Cable Car, which takes you very high to Apharwat Peak (4,200m). You can see snow even in summer! We walk in the green meadows and see the world's highest golf course. After a full day of mountain views, we drive back 56 km to Srinagar. This day helps your lungs get ready for the Ladakh heights.
Today the real road adventure begins! we drive 204 km to Kargil. We cross the famous Zojila Pass (3,528m), which is a bit scary but very exciting. We stop at Sonamarg (Meadow of Gold) for tea. On the way, we visit Drass, which is the second coldest place in the world. You will see the Tiger Hill and Kargil War Memorial. We stay overnight in Kargil (2,676m). The landscape starts changing from green forest to rocky mountains.
We drive 210 km toward the heart of Ladakh. Today we cross two high passes: Namika La (3,700m) and Fotu La(4,108m). We stop at Lamayuru Monastery, also called "Moonland" because the soil looks like the surface of the moon! We see the Giant Buddha statue at Mulbekh on the way. By evening, we reach Leh city (3,500m). Your body will feel good because we came slowly from Srinagar. Overnight stay in a comfortable Leh hotel.
Today is a spiritual day. We visit the biggest monasteries near Leh. First is Hemis Monastery, hidden in a hidden valley, and then Thiksey Monastery, which looks like a giant palace on a hill. We also see the Shey Palace. The driving is easy (90 km total) and we stay at the same elevation (3,500m). It is a good day to learn about Buddhist culture and take many beautiful photos. Overnight stay in Leh.
YGet ready for the famous blue lake! We drive 225 km and cross Chang La Pass, the third highest road (5,360m). We reach Pangong Lake (4,225m) by afternoon. This lake is famous from movies and changes color from blue to green. You will stay in a deluxe camp near the water. It is very cold here, but the stars at night are amazing. This is the most famous part of any Srinagar to Ladakh road trip packages.
Wake up early for a beautiful sunrise at the lake—the colors are like magic! After breakfast, we drive back 225 km to Leh. We cross Chang La Pass again. We can stop at the Hemis National Park area to look for marmots (cute mountain animals). By evening, you reach Leh city. You can spend time in the market or rest at the hotel. Descending back to 3,500m makes you feel very energetic and relaxed for the night.
Today we touch the highest motorable road! We cross Khardung La Pass at 17,582 ft (5,359m). The views of the Karakoram mountains are huge. We reach Nubra Valley and visit Diskit Monastery with the giant gold Buddha. In the evening, we go to Hunder Sand Dunes for a ride on the Double-Humped Camels. Staying in a green village like Hunder (3,000m) is very peaceful. Total 125 km of world-class mountain driving.
In the morning, we visit the quiet Samstanling Monastery in Sumur village. Then we drive back over Khardung La Pass to Leh. You can take more photos at the top if you missed them yesterday. We reach Leh by afternoon. You have free time to explore the local cafes or do some shopping. It is a relaxing 125 km drive back to the city. Overnight stay in a Leh hotel for some well-deserved comfort.
We drive along the Indus River to see "magic" spots. First is Magnetic Hill, where your car rolls uphill by itself! Then we see Sangam, where the Zanskar and Indus rivers meet. We also visit the Hall of Fame museum to see the history of Ladakh. The road is very flat and smooth (140 km total). The elevation stays around 3,500m, so it is a very easy day for everyone. Overnight stay in Leh.
Today is your last day of sightseeing. We visit the white Shanti Stupa for a bird's eye view of the whole valley. Then we explore the 9-story Leh Palace, which was once the home of kings. You can walk through the old town and buy souvenirs like pashmina or apricots. The driving is very less (30 km), so you have plenty of time to enjoy the vibes of Leh. Farewell dinner at the hotel.
Your 13-day "Highway to Heaven" journey ends today. After a final Himalayan breakfast, we drop you at the Leh Airport (5 km drive). You fly away with a heart full of memories and a camera full of blue lakes and high passes. You have successfully completed one of the best road trips in the world! Chuntzu HVerified One of the Best Days I’ve Had in the Mountains LOVE “RUMBAK Snow Leopard Trip” 🖤🤍Before coming, everyone told us it was basically impossible to see a snow leopard in early November — which honestly just made me want to try even more. And guess what? We got lucky. 🤞🏾This whole trip was one of those experiences that reminds you why traveling is worth it. Watching wildlife in the mountains, especially the snow leopard, felt unreal. Our guide and the wildlife spotter clearly knew what they were doing; they shared tons of interesting details about the animals and the valley, but in a way that felt relaxed and genuine, not like a lecture. We also saw plenty of blue sheep throughout the day. The timing was comfortable — not rushed at all — and the lunch break at the homestay was perfect. The food was simple but really satisfying, exactly what you want when you’ve been out in the mountains.Everything was arranged smoothly, and the team made us feel like we were in good hands the whole time. I’ve already told my friends and family that if they ever come to Ladakh, they must do this. It would honestly be a shame to visit and miss out on something like this.Big thanks to the whole crew, Rigzin and Jigmed:) — it was an incredible day, and one I won’t forget anytime soon. Tour22928098945Verified Incredibly-Amazing-Adventure Trip in Trans-Himalayan Region Strongly Recommend the Mountain Intelligence crew for Trans-Himalayan region tourism. From the initial discussions our itinerary was based on our interests and personalized experiences. They live & breath the terrain therefore can plan and execute a tailored trip.We had an AMAZING 7-days and 6-nights adventurous trip through Ladakh. Very Big Thank You, Jigmed & Rigzin for arranging this incredibly memorable trip for us, it was Par Excellence experience !! Highlights of our trip … - Spot-on time-bound planning of destinations and sightseeing.- Safe drivers that navigated the intricately winding Trans-Himalayan terrain. Gulp, windy roads, unpaved in some parts where the vehicle is up against the mountain and valley's does make one's heart skip few beats !!- Transport vehicles were equipped with oxygen tank just in case one needs to address altitude sickness. Fortunately we did not need any medical attention (Pshew!!). - Tip for travelers: 1) Ascertain cardio fitness and blood-oxygen level is sustainable for high altitude. 2) Listen to your body and don’t push your luck, this will ensure a safe and enjoyable trip :-)- Hotels in Leh, Nubra Valley & Pangong Lake were cozy and served freshly cooked delicious food. Friendly hotel staff even catered to special food requests. Appreciation and tips goes a long way :-)- Special Mentions: * Artisanal Alchemy's Dining Experience was one-of-kind where "authentic" Ladakhi gastronomy was curated by the incredible host, Kunzes Angmo. She accompanied the delectable delicacies with interesting narratives of the cuisine origin, spices, and more. We strongly recommend this to folks that love & enjoy good food peppered with great history of Ladakh food stories :-) * De Reeva Resort, Pangong offers incredible views of the lake. It's a short walk to the lake to soak in the views, both at sunset and sunrise !!- Regret not being able to do the day-hike to Stok Changma due to road closures for the Ladakh Marathons. However the Artisanal Alchemy's Dining Experience 'more-than' made-up for this missed trek :-) killian cVerified Baby Trek with Family/Friends Great experience, thanks to Jigmet who was an excellent guide. Great moments shared with him also in the Home-Stay. He was able to adapt, both for the pace and for the deviations. Professionalism, reassurance and total confidence.I highly recommend. Wander57374543012Verified A wonderful experience in Ladakh with Mountain Intelligence We took a 7-day and 6-night trip through Ladakh with Mountain Intelligence. The tour included Leh and the Nubra Valley. We planned to reach Pangong Lake as well, but eventually decided to return to Leh for altitude sickness prevention. Our driver was exceptional: a very friendly boy, very helpful and attentive at all times. He even accompanied us to a health center in Nubra when we were not feeling well, which gave us a lot of peace of mind. In addition, he was driving safely and prudently along the complex roads in the region, which we greatly value. The stays in the different accommodations were also very nice, comfortable and cozy.In short, it was a very positive experience that I would recommend to anyone who wants to discover Ladakh with caring and responsible professionals. I would encourage everyone to share this adventure with Mountain Intelligence. Adventure47040135609Verified Superb❤️👍💪👏👏 Super Exciting Trip! Mani CVerified Ice climbing It was a amazing experience, I was a beginner and rigzin helped me a lot to climb my first ever wall. They had all the gears and I always felt safe. Will do it again when I am in leh. Clement LVerified Incredible Experience in the Himalayas I had a truly unforgettable experience climbing all 6070m of UT Kangri with Rigzin, supported by his team from Mountain Intelligence. Rigzin provided incredible help in pushing me up the mountain despite the going getting tough for me, especially in the final 500m of elevation or so. My acclimitization was not the best (my fault) and so the altitude was a challenge. Nonetheless, Rigzin supported me every step of the way and helped when he was needed the most. On the descent, I accidentally fell into a river and suffered some cuts and abrasions. Rigzin and team went out the way to send me to a hospital and got me checked. It goes without saying that I could never have made it up and down safely without their help!I wish them all the best and definitely look forward to the next adventure with them!
