Trip Itinerary

Your high-altitude adventure begins as you land at Leh Airport. A representative from our team will meet you and transfer you to your hotel. Since you are landing at 3,500m, it is absolutely essential to spend the entire day resting to allow your body to adjust to the thin air. You can enjoy local butter tea and stay hydrated at the hotel. In the evening, if you feel energetic, you can take a very slow walk to the Leh Main Market to see local life and handicrafts. This first day of your Leh Ladakh car trip with Umling La Pass is reserved for relaxation and health preparation. Dinner and overnight stay at your hotel in Leh.

After a relaxing breakfast, we begin exploring the sights around Leh. We cover approximately 90 km today on basic terrain. We visit the Hall of Fame museum to learn about Himalayan war history, the sacred Pathar Sahib Gurudwara, and the mysterious Magnetic Hill where cars appear to move uphill against gravity. We also visit the Sangam point, the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers. In the evening, we visit the white-domed Shanti Stupa for a panoramic sunset view of the valley. This day helps you stay active while keeping your body ready for the higher altitudes coming next. Overnight stay at your hotel in Leh.

Today we drive 126 km to the famous Nubra Valley. The journey takes us over the legendary Khardung La Pass, which stands at 17,582 ft. At the top, you can enjoy a cup of tea at the world's highest cafe. As we descend into the valley, the landscape changes to a cold desert. We visit the Diskit Monastery to see the massive 32m Maitreya Buddha statue. Later, we head to the Hunder Sand Dunes for an iconic sunset ride on the Double-Humped Bactrian Camels. Staying in a boutique camp or guest house at 3,000m is very comfortable. This is a highlight for many on our Leh Ladakh car trip.

We drive 200 km from Nubra Valley to the stunning Pangong Lake. The route follows the picturesque Shyok River and passes through remote mountain villages. On the way, we stop at the Rezang La War Memorial in Chushul, a site of great historical importance. By afternoon, you will see the first glimpse of the blue Pangong Lake (4,225m). The lake is famous for its ever-changing colors and stretches across the border into China. We check into a campsite or guest house near the shore. The evening is yours to explore the lake and enjoy the quiet beauty of the high grasslands under the starlit sky.

After breakfast by the lake, we drive 180 km deeper into the Changthang region toward Hanle village. This area is very remote and offers a glimpse into the untouched wilderness of Ladakh. Hanle (4,500m) is famous for its clear skies and is home to the Indian Astronomical Observatory, one of the highest optical observatories in the world. You can visit the historic Hanle Monastery, which offers amazing aerial views of the village. Hanle is the perfect place for astrophotography and peaceful reflection. We stay in a local homestay or guest house, experiencing the warm hospitality of the Ladakhi people in this high-altitude desert.

Today is the most exciting day of your expedition. We drive 90 km one way to reach the summit of Umling La Pass at 19,024 feet. Standing on the world's highest motorable road is a once-in-a-lifetime achievement. The views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks and the Indus River below are unmatched. The thin air and relentless winds make it a true test of spirit. After spending some time taking photos and celebrating the reach, we drive back 90 km to Hanle. This 180 km round trip is the core of our Leh Ladakh car trip with Umling La Pass. Overnight stay back in Hanle.

We begin our return journey to Leh, covering a distance of approximately 250 km. The route takes us through Chumathang, where you can witness natural hot springs bubbling out of the earth. We stop for a relaxing lunch break at Upshi village before continuing toward Leh. Along the way, we visit the beautiful Thiksey Monastery and stop by the famous Rancho School from the movie 3 Idiots. By late evening, you will arrive back in Leh city (3,500m). After many days in remote areas, the comforts of a hotel and the local market will feel very welcoming. Overnight stay at your hotel in Leh.

Your 8-day Himalayan car trip concludes today. After a final breakfast at the hotel, our driver will transfer you to the Leh Airport for your flight home. As you fly over the massive peaks of the Great Himalayas, you will see the winding roads where you just drove. You leave with the pride of reaching the highest road on earth and many stories of the unique culture and landscapes of Ladakh.
