Lamayuru to Chilling Trek – A 5-Day Adventure in Ladakh
Lamayuru, Ladakh

The Lamayuru to Chilling Trek is a legendary adventure in the heart of Ladakh, often called the “Moonland” trek due to its unique, crater-like landscapes. This 5-day journey is perfect for travelers wanting to see real mountain life and ancient Buddhist culture. You start from the 10th-century Lamayuru Monastery, one of the oldest in the region, and walk through hidden valleys that cars cannot reach.

The trail takes you over three high mountain passes: Prinkti La, Kongskil La, and Dung Dung Chan La. At the top of these passes, you get big, clear views of the Stok and Karakoram ranges. You will walk through green villages like Wanla and Hinju, where people still live in traditional ways. You can see yak herders in their summer camps and find rare Himalayan flowers like the Edelweiss.

The trek ends at Chilling, a village famous for its copper craftsmen who have been making bells and bowls for centuries. This trek is moderate but gives you a full feeling of Ladakh’s nature—from dry mountain slopes to crystal clear river crossings. It is the best choice for those seeking a mix of spiritual peace and high-altitude excitement.

Trek Itinerary

Start with a visit to the ancient monastery. The walk is steady toward Prinkti La (3,732m). You will see "moon-land" rock formations. Cross the pass and descend through the Shila Gorge to reach Wanla village. Gradient is mostly easy to moderate.

A long but gentle walk along the riverside and road. You pass through small hamlets and green barley fields. You will see local farmers and traditional houses. The elevation gain is small, making it a smooth hike to the meadow camp at Hinju.

The most challenging day. A steep climb leads to Kongskil La (4,948m), the highest point. Expect cold winds and panoramic views of Zanskar. The descent is steep on loose moraine. You will see yak herder huts and high-altitude pastures at the campsite.

Walk involves river crossings and passing through Sumda Chenmo. You will see wild rose bushes and the rare Edelweiss flower. The trail is a mix of flat walks and short, steep ascents. You stay at a beautiful meadow base below the next pass.

Final climb to Dung Dung Chan La (4,400m) for a last look at the Zanskar peaks. A long, gradual descent follows. You walk along ridges with views of the Zanskar River. Finish at Chilling, known for its silversmiths and copper work.
