Because the air is very thin at this altitude, your first day is entirely dedicated to resting and relaxing. There are no physical activities or sightseeing trips planned for today. This strict rest is very important because it helps your body safely adjust to the new mountain environment. Today, we slowly start our exploration with a short, easy sightseeing trip around the local town. We will visit the historic Leh Palace, an ancient nine-story royal building that stands tall over the city and offers great views of the old streets below. Today, our journey takes us on a longer drive toward the town of Kargil. The landscape changes completely today, and we will pass through a famous area known as "Moonland" near Lamayuru. We will stop to visit the ancient Lamayuru Monastery, which sits perched right on top of these unique hills. Further down the road, we will stop to admire the Mulbekh Chamba Buddha, a giant statue carved directly into a solid rock face right next to the highway. By evening, we arrive in Kargil and check into a top-rated premium hotel to relax.

Our exploration continues today as we take a scenic drive through the southern loop of the Padum area. We will visit three distinct and historic Zanskar valley monasteries today. First, we stop at Sani Monastery, which is one of the oldest holy sites in the entire region and features a very famous ancient stupa. Next, we follow the rocky river canyon to visit Bardan Monastery and Mune Monastery, both sitting dramatically on steep cliffs over the rushing water. After exploring these peaceful places and learning about the traditional way of mountain life, we return to our premium hotel in Tsarap village to enjoy an excellent dinner and premium hospitality.

Today is an exciting excursion to see a ruined mountain palace and a mysterious cave monastery. We will drive out to see the old Zangla Palace ruins, which once housed the royal family of Zanskar. Afterwards, we head toward Dzongkhul, a fascinating monastery built directly inside a deep mountain cave. Please note that the road to Dzongkhul is exceptionally rough and bumpy, requiring two to three hours of slow, rugged driving. Because this drive can be tiring for your body, we have left the rest of the afternoon completely free with no other activities scheduled, allowing you to return early and properly rest up at your comfortable hotel.

Today is one of the biggest highlights of our entire Himalayan expedition! We leave the hotel early and take a beautiful two-hour drive along the river to the tiny village of Purne. From Purne, we leave the vehicles behind and begin a thrilling two-hour trek on foot through a deep, narrow canyon. Our destination is the legendary Phuktal Monastery, a magical place built completely into the mouth of a massive cliffside cave over a bright blue river. We will check if the monastery is currently allowing guests to stay in their traditional shared guesthouse. If that is unavailable, we will stay at an excellent premium resort back in Purne.

Wake up early this morning to experience something truly magical. You can attend the morning prayers with the young monks and photograph the beautiful sunrise light as it hits the cliffside of Phuktal Monastery. The morning peace here is deeply moving. After breakfast, we will pack up and make the two-hour trek back out to our vehicles in Purne. From there, we take a comfortable drive back to Tsarap village. You will return to our favorite premium hotel, where you can take a hot shower, wash up after the trek, and enjoy a luxurious, relaxing evening in a cozy room.

We say goodbye to Padum today and start a long, adventurous drive to the remote village of Lingshed using the northern section of the new NPD road. This drive takes about six to eight hours because the mountain road is currently being upgraded, but the scenery along the route is absolutely wild and untouched. You will pass through several remote highland villages tucked away in the deep mountains. Because there are no modern hotels in this isolated area, we have arranged a wonderful, traditional homestay for you in Lingshed. It is a fantastic opportunity to experience authentic local hospitality and see how families live in the high Himalayas.

Having the whole day here means you can take your time capturing stunning photography in both the soft morning light and the golden evening sun. You can also interact with the friendly local villagers, learn about their traditional farming methods, and enjoy another cozy night of local food and warm hospitality at your traditional homestay.

We leave Lingshed today and head back toward the main highway, driving through some of the most dramatic canyon landscapes in the region. We will also stop to visit the historic Wanla Monastery, which stands proudly on a sharp rocky ridge over an old village. After a beautiful day of driving and taking photos, we will check into the best traditional homestay available in Wanla village, ensuring you enjoy great local comforts and home-cooked food.

  • Personal Expenses: Any purchases made outside of the itinerary, including spa treatments, massages, laundry services, room service, extra snacks, alcoholic beverages, and souvenir shopping.
